I had the pleasure of shooting the POF P-47 Thunderbolt air-air about a week
before the show. That was cool. Our photo ship was a Cessna 210, so we were
shooting through the plexiglass, but the weather for socal was great. It was
clear! Visibility was awesome for Chino and the temp was perfect.
Steve Hinton was flying the P-47. Hinton flies every warbird at the Museum. Yes,
I said every warbird. He tucked that P-47 right along side the C-210 and moved
slowly around the photo box. It looks real cool through the camera, but the
view is simply awesome if you put your camera down for a few seconds.
I was using 2 bodies, so I switched twice, each time looking up without the
camera to get a visual of how close he really was. I even asked him to back off
just a bit so I would not clip the shot. I like to use my 24-75mm zoom for these
shots and I was at 24mm the whole time after he formed up.
Hinton is a superb pilot. He can fly many different warbirds and he flies them
all with an incredible touch. Recently I was told that he flew the F-86 and
formed up with a way, way slower T-6 for a photo shot. The guy is good.
